Discipline Disparity Ratio Lookup

Pick a state and a benchmark to compute the disparity ratio of its physician discipline rate against the national average. A ratio of 1.0 equals the baseline. Above 1.5 indicates notably elevated enforcement; above 2.0 is substantial.

How the disparity ratio works

The disparity ratio is the state's serious-discipline rate per 1,000 licensed physicians divided by the chosen baseline rate. PlainDiscipline normalizes raw action counts using FSMB Physician Census 2023 totals, so each state's number is comparable. Threshold buckets follow the descriptive convention used in the Office for Civil Rights Dear Colleague guidance applied to school-discipline data — they are descriptive, not causal.

  • ≥ 2.0× — substantial overrepresentation
  • 1.5–2.0× — notable overrepresentation
  • < 1.5× — within typical range
